Part 2: Banter Writes

Chapter 7: Grayville Zoo Day (1)

Banter writes a new story called Away-Life, which is set here in Grayville. It’s a different type of story for her, she realizes, but she’s up for the task. Challenges have created her as the author she is today. Without such mountains to climb in her life, she will not be the strong woman she labels herself to be.

The short tale that she wants to craft on paper, stringing hours of her time together and hand-writing the six thousand words with sharpened pencils, is nothing like the mysteries she develops. Away-Life is about the complex relationship a man faces with his bitchy wife, and the tender relationship that he has with the owner of an independent bookstore, whom the man falls for. Trevina has been thinking of the tale for quite some time now. Four months to be exact. And now is the time to finally scrawl the story to paper, bringing it alive.

Rarely, if ever, does she concentrate her time on short pieces of writing. Lolita Key and suspenseful mysteries have always held her attention, manipulating her craft. Murder scenes, trials, and cops bantering together while eating donuts and drinking coffee is what she mostly works on, which helps pay her bills and creates a comfortable lifestyle. To design six thousand words on mundane lives in a somewhat dull town in Pennsylvania, a town that Trevina knows quite well, seems ludicrous. The story calls for her attention, though. Because the task calls for her, she feels that she must take the remaining hours of the evening and craft her tale.

Before sitting down at her walnut desk in a semi-illuminated study, Dr. Sharon Shaw calls her.

Banter is excited to hear the woman’s voice, calling Sharon her girlfriend now that they have been dating for over six weeks. A smile lights up her face and a feeling of warmth settles between the area of her breasts that can easily be defined as cleavage. Happy, not perturbed regarding the interruption, Banter asks, “What is it, love?”

“Tomorrow is Grayville Zoo Day. Will you be my date?”

Of course Banter will. She can’t think of anyone else she would rather go with. Not her sister, Belinda. Not her parents. Not her agent or editor. Sharon seems to have her heart these days, which pleases her, and she chooses not to break such a strong connection between the two women anytime soon.

“When will you pick me up, Sharon?” Banter inquires, thrilled with tomorrow’s plans, loving the Grayville Zoo and Grayville Day, knowing that they will have much fun together.

“Ten in the morning. I’ll bring us lemon cupcakes and cinnamon coffee for breakfast.”

“Your lemon cupcakes?”

“Yes, the ones I make from scratch.”

Banter glows. How Sharon finds time to bake is beyond Banter’s comprehension. Not that Banter is complaining, though. Rather, she loves Sharon’s homemade nut bread, double-chocolate cookie bars, and strawberry pie. Although Sharon doesn’t bake a lot, she certainly knows how to please Banter, emotionally, physically, and with foodies.
